8 Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.

-“Come close to God” This is because the church was fractured and needed healing, James calls the community to collectively approach God.

-“Wash your hands” figuratively represents a person’s deeds. The command to cleanse them indicates that they were defiled with sin and required purification.
